We are very excited to announce the launch of our first three chapters in Washington DC, Chicago and Los Angeles. It has long been our goal to parlay our success in NYC to other cities to keep spreading awareness about literacy in Pakistan and raising money to fund our schools. If you have friends or family in any of these cities, please encourage them to get involved! We have also recently found a chapter leader in Boston and will update you as soon as he gets underway. A little intro to each chapter below:
Washington DC: The
DC chapter was started by Sabah Iqbal who actually attended our first YOUR DIL meeting in NYC in 2005. The team just announced their first event at trendy restaurant
Tabaq Bistro on
Monday September 18 at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $10 at the door and all proceeds go to YOUR DIL. For more information please contact Sabah at sabah2002@gmail.com.
Chicago: Nadia Mohammad, who initially got involved with YOUR DIL in NYC and Farwa Hussain whose sister has been a volunteer with us for the past year, have started the
Chicago chapter with their first event scheduled for Saturday September 2 at 6:30 PM to coincide with the
ISNA conference in Chicago.
Reza’s Restaurant, known to have the best Mediterranean food in Chicago will be hosting the dinner event, a great way for conference attendees to meet each other and support our cause. $40
pre-paid tickets ($50 at the door) include dinner and a donation to YOUR DIL. There are a limited amount of tickets so if you plan to attend, buy before-hand. For more information please contact Nadia at nd7purple@gmail.com.
Los Angeles: Maliha Tapal whose family has been involved with DIL for many years helped found the Los Angeles chapter. As their first project, the chapter has started a Read-A-Thon where local children ages 5-12 gather sponsors who pay them for each book they read during the summer. The event encourages children to read, introduces them to the concept of charity and helps raise money for YOUR DIL. For more information about the Read-A-Thon or to get involved, please email Maliha at malihatapal@yahoo.com.
We hope you will pass on information about these chapters to your contacts in the respective cities. We are very excited to have all these volunteers on board and wish our new chapters much success as they join us in the fight against illiteracy in Pakistan.
If you would like to start a chapter in your city please contact myself at samar@yourdil.org or Rabia Ahmed at rabia@yourdil.org.
